Here is another snap shot of what the grade 4's have been working in November and on through December:
Language Arts Readers Worshop continues to focus on reading stamina. We are really challenging ourselves to see how long we can go without being distracted from our books. Students who were reluctant to choose a chapter book were challenged to do so. Our focus is on identifying main ideas in narrative writing, which requires readers to be woring with stories. We will begin to formally working in predicting and making inferences in the coming weeks. In Writers Workshop students have just wrapped up their second descriptive paragraph about a cherished possession. Key learning objectives were writing an effective topic sentence, choosing 3 or more supporting details that use a variety of senses to describe their possession. They are on display in the classroom right now. Have a look during parent teacher conferences. We are currently introducing narrative writing with a focus on crafting a personal narrative. Students are exploring memorable events in their lives in order to choose one that they believe will make a great story. Math We continue to revisit skills taught earlier in the year to help with building some retention. (Time, place value, comparing and ordering numbers and addition) . The past 2 weeks we have been focused on subtraction. Understanding the concept, performing the operation with up to 4 digits and problem solving have been covered. Students are also learning how to distinguish between a problem that requires subtraction opposed to problems that require addition. We have now moveed on to learning the concept of multiplication. Students are working with array, diagrams and repeated addition to build an understanding of the concept. Students will also be looking at patterns and fact families to help build memory of multiplication facts. Social Studies Students are currently wrapping up the unit Understanding The Land with a project that will connect their knowledge of landscape, natural vegetation and climate to a historical landmark or site in one of Alberta's natural regions. Students have chosen a topic that they are interested in and are building a presentation that they will share with the class. Science In November we wrapped up the Waste in our World Unit. We are now beginning to explore Light and Shadows. Students will be exploring the various forms of light they encounter each day and will learn to determine the source by which that light is made. Students will move into experimenting with the interaction of light with opaque, translucent and transparent materials. This month, they will also be recording observations of shadows made from sunlight at different times of the day to understand the relationship between the position of the sun with the length and direction of a shadow. Religion We are wrapping up our first topic of study, which is the exploration of unity within the Catholic Church. They are building an understanding of the values, rituals and beliefs that Catholics all share. We have focused on the Bible as the word of God that we can all learn from. Students have learned to navigsate through the different books of the Old and New Testement. We are currently exploring and learning the 7 Sacraments that all Catholics have the opportunity to participate in. In the next few weeks are focus will turn to Advent and the meaning behind why we celebrate the coming of Jesus.
